ModelViewer2K4 site and contents © 2003-2004 karl g nyman
ModelViewer2K4 is designed to make viewing, evaluation, and fine-tuning of custom character models more versatile. It gives UT2004 content creators a wide variety of viewpoint controls (pan, tilt, dolly, zoom, and flying camera), as well as controls for viewing rag-doll actions and animation sequences, so that custom character models can be more thoroughly examined "in-game." ModelViewer2K4 uses the new Unreal mod files architecture, which
provides a separate directory structure for nearly all the mod's
files. Therefore it is VERY important that the installation directions
be read and followed. From the help document "Using_ModelViewer2K4.txt": =================================================== FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

UMOD installation automatically places the files correctly. See
the directory tree below.
Zip file installation: ModelViewer for UT2004 uses the new UT2K4
Mod architecture, so the files need only be extracted from the
zip, preserving the directory structure of the zipped files. Place
the zip file in your UT2004 directory, right-click on it, select
Extract All..., and follow the Wizard (WinXP). Do not change the extraction path the Wizard provides -- it includes the "top level" mod directory ModelViewerUT2004, which is required.
For clarity, with either install method, here's what you should
end up with. (f) indicates a folder:

have been added to the ModelViewerUT2004\System folder:

ModelViewerUT2004User.ini
Other files may also be added to ModelViewerUT2004\System
depending on the configuration of your UT2004 game installation.

"I tried extracting the
ModelViewer map files to my UT2004\Maps
directory and it asked me if I wanted to overwrite existing UT2004
maps! What should I do?"
DO NOT MANUALLY EXTRACT ANY MODELVIEWER2K4 FILES INTO EXISTING
UT2004 SUB-DIRECTORIES!!
As stated in the help doc "Using_ModelViewer.txt" (see above),
the mod has its own directory and sub-directory structure, as
required by the new UT2004 mod architecture. Extract all files
with the entire directory structure intact, including the "top-level"
ModelViewerUT2004 directory, which should exist in the UT2004\
directory once the zipfile is properly extracted.
See the required directory "architecture" diagram above -- it
shows how all the files should be placed.
"I have the files in the right place, and the mod starts, but
the models are stuck in the floor and look like they're missing
more than half their polygons. What's the problem?"
Make sure that the file named ModelViewer.ini is located in your
UT2004\System folder. If you've installed ModelViewer2K4 from
a zipfile, you'll need to manually move or copy this file from
the ModelViewerDocs folder to UT2004\System. If you used the UMOD
installer, ModelViewer.ini should be automatically installed in
UT2004\System, but check to make sure.
ModelViewer.ini is the only ModelViewer2K4 file that needs to
be moved/copied -- all other mod files can stay in the mod directories.
If for some reason the ModelViewer.ini contents get deleted, improperly
edited, or corrupted and can no longer be used, there is a "backup"
in the ModelViewerDocs folder called "ModelViewerDefault.ini".
Just copy this file to UT2004\System and rename it ModelVIewer.ini
"When I try to use the ModelViewer2K4 camera control keys, some
things don't seem to work right. What's the secret?"
Just practice! And remember that the Alt key is required to activate
the ModelViewer controls, always pressed IN ADDITION TO the control
keys -- Alt+<control key>. While the Alt key is pressed, normal
keybinds (such as V for Voice Menu, or C for Crouch) are locked
out for the keys ModelViewer uses for its controls.
Another thing to remember is that the majority of ModelViewer's
controls are toggled, meaning it takes a keypress to turn then
on AND off. Some controls "override" others. For example, Alt+V
for Pan will supercede the Alt+C (FreeCamera) mode if it's in
effect when Pan is used.
If "continuous action" controls like zoom and dolly are activated,
they must be deactivated with an Alt+<key> combination -- just
pressing a key without Alt will not turn off the action.
"I edited the ModelVIewer.ini file, but there don't seem to be
any changes in the way my model is performing. Did i miss a step?"
Though ModelViewer2K4 allows editing its custom pawn class default
properties without re-compiling (by reading them from ModelViewer.ini),
the mod must be restarted after any edits to ModelViewer.ini,
so the new values are loaded when necessary. The easiest way to
do this is to use the "Quit to UT2004" button in the ModelViewer
main menu. After editing ModelViewer.ini, just launch ModelViewer2K4
again from the Community>User Mods screen of UT2004, and the new
ModelViewer.ini values should take effect.
"I tried using ModelViewer2K4 with a map with vehicles and it didn't work right!
When I get out of a vehicle, I turn into Gorge! And if I get in a vehicle and use Flying Camera mode or Kill Pawn, things get really weird, and sometimes the mod crashes."
This is a known issue. Until a "vehicle-friendly" version is released, the best choice is to not use vehicles with ModelViewer2K4 --
it was designed as a tool for character-model developers, though expanding its capabilities to include vehicles is in the mod's future.
For now, however, ModelViewer2K4 and vehicles don't get along too well together, and in fact the ModelViewer_UM gametype effectively disables vehicles
in maps made for gametypes such as Onslaught. But there are workarounds for getting vehicles into any map, so if you do put a ModelViewer pawn into a vehicle, follow these suggestions:
1) Make sure ModelViewer.ini has the correct entries for your character model, particularly mesh and skins. Using the default
ModelViewer.ini values will cause a character to respawn as Gorge when leaving the vehicle.
2) If you enter Flying Camera mode while in a vehicle, you won't be able to exit Flying Camera mode (or the vehicle) without
undesirable results. Flying Camera mode can be used once to inspect model positioning in the vehicle, but to
recover, it's best to Escape out to the main menu and restart the map to continue.
3) Don't use Kill Pawn while in a vehicle -- this can cause
much strangeness, and in the worst case a GPF, since the mod is expecting to kill a character model, not a
vehicle.
4) In general, it's better to avoid using characters in vehicles with ModelViewer2K4, but keep checking back for updates -- this
capability is next on the list!

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
See the last FAQ on this page
for info about using ModelViewer2K4
and maps with vehicles.
Recent reports indicate that due to changes
in the Unreal mod architecture code
made since the release of UT2004, ModelViewer2K4
cannot be used with the release version (3186) of the game.
Patching to the current (as of 6/27/04) 3236 version
solved the problems being reported.
The files Installing_ModelViewer2K4.txt and
Using_ModelViewer2K4.txt have been updated with
information about the patch level requirement and a more
complete listing of the ModelViewerUT2004\System files that
are installed. No updates to the application at this
time, so a new download isn't necessary.
