FARMINGTON SCHOOL BOARD

MEETING OF JANUARY 19, 2004

FARMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY

6:30 P.M.

  Non-Public Session

Steve Yurick, Chairman                    Brian Blake, Superintendent of Schools

Dave Vachon                                    Butch Lewis, Principal

Richard Cilley                                   Joel Chagnon, Vice Principal

Todd Lefebvre

Mother and student JC came before the Board. Introductions followed. Chairman Yurick advised the Mother and student of their right to counsel and their right to be heard in Public Session.

Mr. Lewis explains that Student JC is coming before the board for having a knife in school. A few classmates, of the student, told the teacher that the student had a condom in his pocket. When the teacher asked the student if he brought something to school that he shouldn’t, the student produced a knife from his pocket. He also gave the teacher the condom.

Mr. Yurick asked JC to explain what occurred at school today. The student explained that he found his brothers knife in his room that morning. He put the knife in his pocket and forgot about it. Later he realized that it was in his pocket, and was going to give it to the teacher. The teacher then asked him to come up front, and asked him if he brought something in that he should not have in school. He gave the knife and condom to the teacher. Mr. Lefebvre explained to the student the policy regarding knives in school, and referred to the handbook that the students are given. The student states that he was aware of the policy, and that is why he gave up the knife. Mom also questions the child, and he repeats the story. Mr. Yurick explains to the parent and student how serious this offense is, and asks for the Board’s recommendation.

Mom and Student were asked to step out while the Board discusses the matter.

Recommendation: That the one week suspension would be excessive due to the fact that the student did surrender the knife. A two-day suspension would be appropriate. There is no current policy regarding the condom.

MOTION: Steve Yurick motions to approve recommendation.
