Keep it green

When you get your tree home, cut another 1 inch off the bottom of the trunk and put it into a bucket of water.

Use a tree stand that holds a good amount of water. A 6- to 8-foot tree will drink 1 to 2 gallons of water a day.

Just like a bouquet of flowers, your tree will only survive if it has plenty of water. Water is all you need to keep your tree fresh -- you don't need to add sugar, vodka, ketchup, 7-Up, bleach or anything else.

Place your tree away from heat registers, space heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, televisions and or other heat sources.

Don't use frayed or broken lights. Unplug lights when you are out of the room, asleep or away.

When the holidays are over, put your Christmas tree in the yard for the birds to live in until spring or participate in your community Christmas tree recycling program.

Savor the memories of the fun you had harvesting and the beauty and aroma of your fresh-cut tree, until its time to do it again next year.
